Kane County Chronicle - Local News and Video for Kane County, Illinois - Tough times for charities?: "But a downturn in the economy means people make tougher decisions about how to spend money. We prioritize each dollar with more purpose. The extras in life such as entertainment, luxury purchases, dinners out, vacations, often take the first hit. The word “necessity” takes on more urgent meaning. Frequently charitable giving does not count as a necessity.

A study recently released by the National Association of Fundraising Professionals shows two-thirds of charities raised more money in 2007 than in 2006. But most reported smaller fundraising gains than the year before. About four in 10 charities said their gains were 20 percent or less. In 2006, about three in 10 reported such small increases."
